On July 27, an excited Gualete community of over 200 children, high schoolers, and parents welcomed DAMA to a wonderful inspiring activity, which included donation of books and school supplies. The event was led by Idanes and Rhina Sanchez, representing both the NY Gualete Association and DAMA, and the DR’s Ministry of Culture.
Maria Socorro del Duque and Victor Bido, from the Ministry, also gave reading workshops, which will continue in the future. DAMA’s supporters Vicky and Nils Liltorp presented the school directors’ Griselda Torres and Nelson Fermin with $1,000 for school supplies.
The directors and community’s representatives noted that this was an unprecedented historic event and in gratitude formally declared Dr. Nuñez-Cedeño “Hijo adoptivo de Gualete” (Gualete’s adopted son), a recognition in reality bestowed on DAMA for its cultural and educational contributions to communities in the DR.
