Dominican Independence Day 2017

DAMA celebrated the 173rd Dominican Independence Day on February 25, 2017. Darío Tejeda, musicologist and Director of the Institute of Caribbean Studies in Santo Domingo, gave an animated, interactive presentation tracing the history of merengue and bachata, accompanied by folkloric dances, carnival costume exhibitions, and Caribbean foods.

DAMA is grateful to this large multi-national audience who joined Dominicans in celebrating their culture and patriotic festivity, and is particularly appreciative of the support received from the Comisionado de Cultura de Rep. Dominican in the U.S, the DR Office of Tourism in Chicago, Univisión-Chicago, García Medical Center, Pangea Money Transfer, O’Hare’s Crown Plaza Hotel, , Punta Cana Restaurant, Señor Pan Café, the LV Night Club, and Avon’s regional managers and distributors in Chicago Noelia Rosario and Josefina Feliz.

Chicago’s Consul General Dr. Gisselle Castillo also welcomed the public and urged it to preserve such a historical event and to be mindful of the role women played in helping forge the Republic.
